eight books to inspire your creativity

Posted by Sofia

I believe it is important to carve out a few minutes everyday to yourself. I like doing a little artwork. Usually my son (4 years) and i sit down for about 20 minutes and just draw and color each our own thing. I like buying art books so i can learn techniques on doodling, drawing, or stamping.. or whatever else, new hobby that helps me relax and get inspired. It costs a lot less than actually taking an art class. Here are a few to get you started. If you had to choose only 3, which books would you choose.

Craft-a-Doodle: 75 Creative Exercises from 18 Artists

The title says enough. Great book with 75 exercise and activities to motivate you to be creative.

stART Journaling: An Art Journaling Workbook

Stamp It!: DIY Printing with Handmade Stamps
Ten designers show their style of stamp carving. My personal favorite, Ishtar Olivera is one of the designers as well. While at it, check out her blog. I haven't tried carving my own stamps yet, but i would love to learn!

Zentangle from the Heart

Zentangle Series - check out and pick your own doodle book. I have tried 'Totally Tangled: Zentangle and Beyond - totally enjoyed it:)

Dreaming From the Journal Page: Transforming the Sketchbook to Art - maybe you enjoy a little bit of journaling?

Creative Thursday: Everyday inspiration to grow your creative practice
If you buy only one book for an inspiration, this is it! I loved it - inspiring, easy to read, wonderfully whimsical artwork. Love!!

Mixed-Media Girls with Suzi Blu: Drawing, Painting, and Fanciful Adornments from Start to Finish
This is another book i have really enjoyed.  When i was a little girl, I used to love drawing pictures of girls and princesses, as i got older, i have forgotten how to. It brought my inner little girl out.

Paper Mate Flair Tip-Guard Medium Tip Felt Porous Pens, 2 Black Pens(8432452PP)
Can i also suggest two items to get you started? This paper mate pens are fantastic. They are felt tipped and great tool for doodling, drawing, outlining, anything.

Sakura XNCW-24N 24-Piece Koi Assorted Water Colors Field Sketch Set with Brush and this watercolor set. You only need to refill the brush with water and you are good to go. This is all you need - color possibilities are endless.

Like you, I believe in encouraging creativity. As a writer, I was thrilled when my son decided he wanted to write a picture book about our cat! So far, I've had him dictate the story to me,and he's drawn one page.He wants me to bind it as a real book, so when it's done I'll print it at a copy center. Any recommendations for an art book that a preschooler (nearing 4) might enjoy?
